The Swimmers

The Swimmers tells the powerful true story of two Syrian sisters, Yusra and Sara Mardini, whose lives are transformed by war and displacement. Growing up in Damascus, the sisters are talented competitive swimmers trained by their father, who dreams of seeing them reach the Olympic Games. When the Syrian civil war destroys their home and disrupts their future, the sisters are forced to flee the country in search of safety in Europe. Their journey takes them from Syria through Lebanon and Turkey, eventually leading them to a dangerous sea crossing toward Greece. During the voyage, their overcrowded inflatable boat begins to sink in the Aegean Sea. Drawing on their swimming skills, Yusra and Sara, along with others on board, jump into the water and physically guide the boat to shore, saving the lives of everyone on board.

After reaching Europe, the sisters face the harsh realities of refugee life, uncertainty, bureaucracy, and separation from their family. Despite these challenges, Yusra continues to pursue competitive swimming in Germany. Her talent and determination eventually lead her to be selected for the Refugee Olympic Team, allowing her to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she represents not only her own dreams but also the resilience of displaced people worldwide.

The film portrays a journey marked by trauma, survival, and hope, highlighting the strength of family bonds and the transformative power of sport in rebuilding identity after displacement.
