Khaled Hosseini – A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007)

The novel chronicles the intersecting lives of two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, whose destinies are shaped by thirty years of volatile political shifts. From the Soviet invasion to the rise of the Taliban, the story documents their struggle for survival within a society defined by war and systemic patriarchal oppression. Despite their different backgrounds, the two women form a bond that becomes their only source of strength against the brutality of their reality.

The narrative moves away from the battlefield to focus on the psychological and physical endurance of women. Hosseini captures the experience of being a passive object of state administration and traditional rules. He shows how the pressure of the system can turn into a desperate assertion of agency through female solidarity.
