Contextual note

Since 2015, Serbia has been one of the main transit routes for migrants, with over 1.5 million people passing through the country on their way to Western Europe.

As a transit country, most available data on the migrant population are collected in reception-transit centers, where migrants only stay temporarily.

In Belgrade, the capital, migrants are accommodated in several centers – such as the asylum-seekers center in Krnjača or the facilities in Obrenovac – while only a few reside in private housing. As a result, migrants are mainly concentrated in these centers, some of which, like the one in Krnjača, are specifically designated for women and families.

Since retrieving reliable data specific to the situation of Belgrade alone remains a challenge, the Numbers & Figures section presents, for the time being, data covering the entire territory of Serbia. This broader focus aims at providing an accurate picture of the migrant population residing – mostly temporarily – across the country.

Nonetheless, the MILAGRO team in Serbia is currently exploring the possibility of extracting more specific data focused on the local context of Belgrade.
