Utrecht (the Netherlands) is a young city with many students and starters. The share of young children in the city has been declining in recent years, while the share of older people is increasing. While the share of single-person households in the Netherlands is constantly increasing, it remains stable in Utrecht (around 52%).
Utrecht has a diverse population with 172 different nationalities. Of the 377,000 Utrecht residents, 41% have a migration background and this share continues to increase. About one in ten Utrechters does not have Dutch nationality.
Another way to look at origin is via country of birth. Of all Utrechters, 24% were born abroad and migrated to the Netherlands. In addition, 17% of Utrechters are children of migrants (that is, born in the Netherlands themselves and one or both parents abroad). This means that 41% of Utrechters have an origin outside the Netherlands. In 2001, this share was 30%.
