Utrecht – Foreign citizens by nationality (2024)

This horizontal bar chart shows the distribution of registered status holders in the Municipality of Utrecht as of January 1st, 2025, out of a total of 2,767 individuals. The largest group consists of Syrian nationals, who account for approximately 40% of all status holders. This is followed by individuals with Afghan and Eritrean nationality, each representing around 8% of the total. All other nationalities are individually smaller and together make up the remaining share.

Status holders are individuals who applied for asylum in the Netherlands and have been granted a provisional residence permit on refugee grounds. Once this permit is issued, they are officially registered as status holders in the Personal Records Database (BRP).

On January 1st, 2025, a total of 2,767 status holders were registered in Utrecht’s BRP. This figure does not include individuals who have since moved to another municipality or who have obtained Dutch nationality. The total number of status holders increased slightly during 2024 but remains below the levels observed in 2019 and early 2020, when the total exceeded 3,000.

Status holders were distributed across different areas of the city, with the largest concentrations found in Overvecht (24%), Zuid (15%), and Zuidwest (14%). In contrast, districts such as Binnenstad, Oost, Noordoost, Leidsche Rijn, and Vleuten-De Meern together accounted for a considerably smaller share, amounting to approximately 23% of the total.
