This pie chart provides an overview of reported migration reasons, or type of residence permit, of immigrants to the Netherlands in 2023, based on a total of 164,735 individuals.
The most common migration reason was family reunification, accounting for approximately 25% of all recorded cases (around 42,000 individuals). This was followed by arrivals under the Temporary Protection Directive, primarily refugees from Ukraine, which represented about 23% of the total. Other major categories include asylum (19%), labour migration (16%), and study-related migration (14%). Remaining cases fall under other or unknown migration motives, together accounting for around 3%.
The data include immigrants of both EU/EFTA and non-EU/EFTA nationality. While family reunification and international protection are dominant among non-EU/EFTA nationals, labour migration is more common among EU/EFTA nationals. Migration motives are derived from the type of residence permit issued at the time of registration.
