[DESCRIPTION UNDER DEVELOPMENT]
This pie chart shows the distribution of reported reasons for migration (or type of permit) for the Netherlands in 2023, based on a sample of 164,735 individuals. Immigrants with a non-EU/EFTA nationality come here mainly to connect with their families. In 2023, 42 thousand of them had the migration motive of family reunification (25%). In addition, many refugees from Ukraine came under the Temporary Protection Directive (23%). The rest immigrated for asylum (19%), work (16%), study (14%), or with another or unknown motive (3%).

In the past, immigrants with an EU/EFTA nationality often settle in the Netherlands to work. In 2022, 47 thousand of them had the migration goal of labour. For 44 thousand of them had the migration goal of labour. For 44 thousand people, no migration goal was derived because they had Dutch nationality. The rest came here to study for some other or unknown reason. Of the people who immigrated between 2010 and 2013, about 60% had emigrated again after 10 years. Whether people stay in the Netherlands or leave depends on the original reason for migration. Of the immigrants with an EU/EFTA nationality those who came here to work or study leave most often. Those who already had Dutch nationality or who came here for their families are the least likely to leave.
