Utrecht – Foreign citizens by nationality (2024)

[DESCRIPTION UNDER DEVELOPMENT]

At the beginning of 2025, 2,767 status holders lived in Utrecht, out of whom, 40% were Syrian. The rest entailed many different status holders with Afghan or Eritean nationality (both 8%). These statistics are based on status holders, who are people who come to the Netherlands to apply for asylum here and receive a provisional residence permit or a rejection. Upon officially receiving a provisional residence permit on the status of refugee, they become known as a status holder.

On Janurary 1st, 2025, 2,767 status holders were registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP) of Utrecht. This number does not include status holders who have since moved to another municipality or become naturalised. The number of status holders inceased slightly in 2024, but it is still below the level of 2019 and early 2020, when it exceeded 3,000.

These status holders lived in various places across the city, with regions in the center contributing to the majority, i.e. Overvecht (24%), South (15%), and Southwest (14%). Meanwhile, for regions on the outskirts of the city, such as Binnenstad, Oost, Noordoost, Leidsche Rijn, and Vleuten-De Meern has considerably fewer status holders (a total of 23%).

This data was collected by the Municipality of Utrecht through the Personal Records Database (BRP).
