This bar chart describes the composition of the population of the Municipality of Utrecht by migration background in 2024, based on administrative population data.
Utrecht has a highly diverse population, with residents representing 172 different nationalities. Approximately one in ten residents does not hold Dutch nationality.
In fact, in 2024, about 23% of Utrecht residents were born abroad and later migrated to the Netherlands, while an additional 17% were born in the Netherlands but have at least one parent who was born abroad. Taken together, these groups account for around 41% of the total population. For comparison, in 2001 the share of residents with an origin outside the Netherlands was approximately 30%, indicating a substantial increase over time.
